Members are invited to publicise events on these pages.  Events organised by non members but having appeal to cemetery conservation and heritage supporters will be considered at the discretion of the Secretary. We do not accept commercial advertising.

Weather, health and safety concerns and other issues may cause events etc to be postponed or cancelled and you are advised to contact the local group to confirm any detail nearer to the event. Please note that any guidance on health and safety should be followed and in some cases the ground may be wet, muddy and/or uneven and stout footwear and suitable clothing is essential for outdoor events such as walks. Many cemeteries were laid out in Victorian times and access may be restricted in parts for safety reasons. The closeness in the grave plots, vandalism and undergrowth may make access difficult for persons with mobility or sight problems. Cemetery managers and voluntary groups of Friends may in some cases be able to advise if there are any local facilities to assist disabled visitors such as an individual to guide a visitor [and their escort or helper] but this is best arranged prior to the proposed visit. Some cemeteries ban dogs, others may permit dogs on a lead and if you propose to take a dog please check first with either the cemetery manager or the local friends group.

TOURS AT THE WEEKEND ARE YEAR ROUND AND ARE FIRST COME FIRST SERVED AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE BOOKED.

East Cemetery

The East Cemetery is available to walk around unaccompanied (with an optional paper guide/map) between the times listed below. There is one guided tour per week on Saturdays only. This tour is optional.

Opening time:  from 10 am weekdays, 11am weekends

Closing time: 5pm British Summer Time (last admission 4.30pm)

Tour times: There is one tour of the EAST Cemetery on Saturdays at 2pm. Tickets may be purchased on the day on a first come, first served basis from 11am when the Cemetery opens. Spaces are are limited to 15 people per tour.

Please note: the Cemetery only accepts cash.

Entry: £3 per adult / £2 for students with valid NUS card or equivalent

Tours: £7 for adults, £5 for students and £3 suggested donation for children over 8 years old.

East Cemetery Tours: Due to a recent increase in demand there is a now a guided tour of the East Cemetery weekly on Saturdays at 2pm. Although the East Cemetery can be visited unaccompanied, visitors may prefer a tour to learn more about the residents and their histories. Tours are around one hour in length and are limited to 15 people. Tickets are sold at the East Cemetery gate on the day of the tour on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. The tour cost of £7 includes entrance to the East Cemetery. Visitors are asked to gather at 1.45pm for a prompt start at 2:00pm.

Large groups (of between 10 and 20 people) hoping to visit the East Cemetery must call the office a minimum of 5 working days before they arrive to confirm that their visit will be possible as prior arrangements made by the Cemetery, such as burials or memorial services, may prevent their admittance. Due to the nature of funerals we cannot predict when they will occur so please check again the day prior to your visit. School groups or similar must also book in advance for the same reason. Groups must pay in one transaction. Children under 16, visiting as part of a group, will be charged £1 donation per person. Adults with the party will be charged the regular rate of £3 per person.

Ticket price includes permission to take photos for personal use only. Video cameras and the use of tripods or monopods are not permitted. Photographers are asked to ensure that their photographic activities do not impede the enjoyment of others and that photographs are not taken of recent graves or mourners.  Please contact the office by email regarding requests for filming and professional or commercial photography with as much detail of the project as possible.

There is no charge for children under the age of 16 when accompanied by an adult although a donation is welcomed. Unaccompanied children under the age of sixteen will not be allowed in the Cemetery.

Please note:  As Highgate is a working cemetery, it is not open to visitors other than grave owners for 30 minutes before funerals and for the duration of funerals.  This is non-negotiable. Regretfully, it is not possible to publish dates and times of every funeral that takes place.  Visitors arriving at the gates will be advised if a funeral is due to take place during their visit and tickets purchased before a funeral will be respected for the rest of the day. Large groups are strongly advised to check with the Cemetery in advance of their visit.

West Cemetery

Weekdays: One tour a day leaves between 1.45 and 2pm from 1st March to 30th November. Please note booking is only available by telephone and is NOT possible by email. Tours last around one hour. A maximum of four (4) places may be booked.

Weekends: Tours are run at least hourly from 11am - 4pm with no advance booking. Tours last around one hour.

We have tours throughout the year at weekends. Each tour is for a maximum of 15 people on a  ‘first come, first served’ basis. It is advisable, especially in holiday seasons, to come at least half an hour before the scheduled time. Sundays are particularly popular and it is sometimes not possible to accommodate everyone wishing to visit.

Ticket prices include permission to take photos for personal use only. Professional photography, video cameras and tripods are not allowed. Photographers are asked to ensure that their photographic activities do not impede the progress of  tours.  Please contact the office regarding requests for filming, professional or commercial photography. Special arrangements may be made by mutual agreement for publications and filming. Please contact the office BY EMAIL only with full details of the project.

Special Tours of the West Cemetery

Special tours are offered for private groups at a minimum cost of £140.  This covers up to 10 people with additional spaces available and charged at £14 a head up to a MAXIMUM of 30.  Special tours are available all year round on weekday mornings only and must be booked a minimum of 4 weeks in advance by telephone AND followed up with a completed booking form. The total experience lasts around 90 minutes and involves an extended tour of the West Cemetery and an introduction to the East Cemetery and East Cemetery admission. There is a non-refundable deposit of the minimum charge of £140 to secure the date.
