 CAN YOU HELP?

Occasionally we receive requests from journalists, university researchers etc looking for information on cemeteries or the current day use of our Victorian cemeteries. Such requests will be featured on this page.

April 2008 Paul Lanagan [Friends of Houghton Cemetery] is researching WWII air raid shelters either supplied for cemetery workers or visitors to cemeteries and whether any still exist today.

February 2008. Dr Sarah Rutherford has been commissioned to write a book The Victorian Cemetery and seeks help from Friends groups in providing images suitable for the publication. In particular can you supply any old illustrations of the interiors of chapels and ephemera specific to cemeteries. A fee will be paid and you will need to confirm that you hold the copyright or that the image is more than 70 years in age. Contact here.

December 2007 Poor Law Project by the National Archives at Kew. A project  to produce a digitalised index of workhouse and poor law records to enable researchers, family historians, local historians etc to reach data from various poor law records. Volunteers after a basic introductory session will be supplied with cd copies of records and asked to list 'keywords' onto an index which the National Archives will coordinate onto a network for internet use. An application has been made to the HLF and if successful the project will begin. It is anticipated that the announcement of any lottery grant will be made early in 2008. Further details can be obtained from Dr Paul Carter, Principal Records Specialist, National Archives, Ruskin Avenue, Kew telephone 020 8876 3444 ext 2120

19th June 2007  Derw Thomas a postgraduate researcher in Heritage Studies at the University of Salford asks:

Can you supply any data on the number of people visiting your cemetery each year excluding people attending funerals? He wishes to quantify the people visiting the cemetery for 'leisure purpose' attracted by the heritage/history/wildlife/ecology
